I had what I would call an idyllic childhood there. Then I was uprooted and we moved to West L.A. It was quite a shock at first, but I grew to love the big city. So much to do! So much to see! Plus we had a boss, kick-ass house in Blair Hills that overlooked the whole city. And if you climbed to the top of the hill, you could watch the sun setting in the other direction. Wonderful! After only 4 years we moved again. This time to the hell-hole that is Houston. Even though we lived in a rich suburb, it was still hell. I never really got very close to anyone there. Though I was very shy, it never stopped me from having lots of friends before that. I guess i was just looking forward to going away to college. I went to a small college, Texas Lutheran, and had lots of friends there. Partied way too much, and discovered that I have no self discipline. So when I graduated with a 2.6 GPA in Political Science, I really had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After several years in dead-end jobs, I decided I wanted to teach high school history and coach baseball. That lasted about 2 years when I was about to get my teaching cert. I decided that I didn't want to teach anymore. Then I got married to my girlfriend of 7 years. She was a librarian and I finally realized that that would be a good career for me too. And it has been. Especially since I'm an A/V librarian and get to spend my days surrounded with movies, music, slides, filmstrips, books and all kinds of other boss stuff. Plus I'm in charge! I can pretty much do whatever I want to with my dept. Though it's frustrating not having a budget and having to work under visionless, old, near retirement idiots all the time. Hopefully, when our new library is finally built (in 2006) I'll be able to enjoy my job a bit more. I have now been married for 13 years and we have 2 little girls and a mortgage on a townhouse to show for it. I am very proud of all my "girls", though they tend to piss me off to obscene degrees all the time. Maybe I'm starting on my mid-life crisis or something. My ambition now is to move back to California. Even if I can't find a suitable library job. California is just very attractive to me right now. Probably the mid-life crisis thing again.
UPDATE: I got the perfect job in the perfect place in California, SLO. I have been re-born and couldn't be happier! Of course that means less miserable blogging, but that's just the price I'll have to pay. | | Likes: | Sex, driving fast, women, rainy days, stormy nights, pina coladas at Trader Vics, sex (with myself), sitting on top of a mountain and pretending that I rule all that I can see. Oh, and tater tots! | | Dislikes: | No sex, duhbya, mean people, "tough guys", black ice, dumb people, reckless drivers and soggy tater tots. Also, I don't like fish because of an unrealistic phobia. | | Interests: | Music, movies, comedy tv shows, sports, reading, sex, being by myself, at least for a while, history, especially WWII, cars, scientific stuff, travel, I get obsessed with finding out information about random things that come on my "radar screen". I tend to research them until I get bored with them then find something else to obsess about. |
| People/Heroes: | Most of my heroes have let me down over the years, so I'll go with the standard Mom, Dad and brothers. | | Books: | So many favorites, so little time. | | Authors: | Kurt Vonnegut, Edgar Allan Poe, John Steinbeck, Kim Stanley Robinson, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, James Fenimore Cooper, Nick Hornby, H. L. Mencken, Oscar Wilde, Patrick O'Brian, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Richard Matheson, James Jones, Herman Wouk, Charles Willeford, Jim Thompson, David Brin, Bill Bryson, and many many others. | | Music Genres: | 60s Rock, 70s Rock, classic rock, Punk, New Wave, most other genres in general except country and rap (95% of it at least). | | Bands/Artists: | The Who, The Kinks, Hendrix, The Turtles, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Wire, The Doors, The Fall, The Cure, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Talking Heads, Rank and File, ZZ Top (earlier stuff only), Joan Armatrading, Cake, The Killers, etc. etc. etc... | | Albums/CDs: | Too many to name. | | Songs: | ditto | | TV Shows: | Seinfeld, Simpsons, Scrubs, The Banana Splits Show | | Movies: | I've only got a few more years to live, don't make me list them you bastards! | | Actors: | Meg Ryan | | Games: | King Oil, Life, backgammon, lawn darts, Heroes of Might and Magic | | Sports: | Baseball, NFL, pretty much anything else that comes on tv. I love sports. I'm a sports addict. But not a face painting, team color clad, sheep. My favorite teams are the Dodgers, Astros and Orioles in baseball the Lakers in basketball and the Ravens in football. | | Colors: | Blue, black, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, white, brown, brownish yellow | | Pets/Animals: | My daughter has a curly tailed lizard. It's cute. I also like dogs, but we don't have one at the moment. | | Cars/Motorcyles: | 1968 Camaro RS/SS | | Season: | Spring | | Food: | pizza, steak, any italian, fried chicken, Tex Mex, my tastes are pretty pedestrian. I don't really like the fancy stuff too much, mainly for economic reasons. I don't think you should have to pay $50 for a piece of meat and a few scraps of vegetables. I also do not like monkey brains or sheep testicles or snails or any other animal scraps. Just give me the best parts please. | | Drink: | Pepsi, Diet Coke, beer, wine, Though I'm not a connosewer here either. As long as it tastes ok. I don't need to fool myself that a $250 glass of wine is any better than a $4 glass. All wine is way overpriced imho. | | Quotes: | If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl. -- H.L. Mencken, Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often. --Mark Twain, Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag and begin slitting throats. --H. L. Mencken, War is God's way of teaching Americans geography. --Ambrose Bierce | | Position: | upright and locked |
I don't have a clue...

Being a Dud.. er I mean Dad...
So, I never really wanted, like really really REALLY wanted to have have kids. But now that I have 2 little girlies, it's not as bad as I had thought it would be. Even with girls. I dunno, I find I can't relate to a lot of what they like to do and stuff, but I love them very dearly and they are precious. They have me wrapped around their fingers. Sigh... life ain't too bad as a Dad.
In the last couple weeks I taught my 8 yr. old how to ride a bike and she's really so happy about it. She had been so afraid of not having training wheels and falling over, but once she finally got going...

Oh yeah, we are buying a house. It's awesome. Looks somewhat like this, except with more mature trees in front and needing a new roof. We think this is the owner, who we haven't met yet. You know that I've got to meet him! It was a rental and the latest tenents are Methodist pastors, so it's in great shape. The pentagram on the floor of the garage could have been put there by anyone!
That is...
What a fun day!
So today I traded in about 400+ crappy cds that were donated to the library to the local, awesome record store who gave me store credit to buy lots of cool stuff for the libraries. Well, not necessarily new stuff, but stuff we should have. Like the classics that have disappeared over the years. I also got some new cool stuff as well. Anyhoo, it was a fun day of roaming around the store looking and drooling and wandering and wishing I was a fucking millionaire. I had taken several lists of things we needed, but I kept going off the board for better stuff. So shoot me. Man, I love...
